  • Stupid Pigeon

We'll start by naming then stupid pigeon and smart pigeon.  Smart Pigeon stayed in his pen where these is food and water.  When I turned around and saw Stupid pigeon out of his cage I was shocked and disappointed.  How does one catch a pigeon alone?  Every time I walked up to it, it would flaps its way to another corner of the barn.

I called one of my sons to come help.  We just succeeded in freaking Stupid Pigeon out and driving him higher in the barn. He got his name when my son gave up in frustration, "Stupid pigeon."  We decided to leave him to fate.

After my son left, while I was finishing chores, I noticed Stupid Pigeon sitting on top of one the cages near the floor.  As I got close to him, he flew up in a low portion of the rafters.  I held up a cage with the door propped open.

...I'm falling asleep so...to be continued

  • Aging and Memory

I went to visit Grandma today.  It's been inappropriately too long since I last visited.  She didn't remember us except for one brief moment during the visit.  She didn't remember anything that I talked to her about the past.

I decided that memory and hearing made conversation impossible and sitting there doing nothing was just too awkward, so my mom and I sang hymns.  Grandma kept wanting us to sing another one and she said, "Thank you" at the end of almost every one.

She didn't remember me, my mom, or any of the past events I mentioned.  But when I sang Jesus Loves Me, I saw her lips moving as she tried to "sing" along.

I hope if I can only remember one thing at 92, that it would be the words to Jesus Loves Me...ya, that' would be a good thing.

And when it's time to die,

And when it's time to die,

And when it's time to die, Give me Jesus.

  • Take Back Ground

Over two years ago I started running.  I hated it.  I never thought I could run more than two miles.  I was shocked when I finally reached the point when I ran 2.25 miles straight. I did so after deciding that I would stop criticizing myself in my mind for how much of a runner I was not, and just move, walking or running 3 miles 3 times a week.   Often when I was tired, I would repeat the phrase over and over in my head, "Take back ground:  emotional ground, physical ground, spiritual ground, financial ground."  Over and over.  I started to like running because it was time alone with God and I was making a difference.

Yesterday, after losing 20 pounds over the past couple years, I met 2 goals.  I ran 6 miles straight and acheived 40,000 pts in the President's Fitness Challenge.  I acheived my Bronze Award!

  • The Fair in January

So today I bought a bunch of State Fair corn dogs.  Austin loves them so it was fun to bring them home.  He has a healthy appreciation for food happy.

I was thinking.  You know,  you could feed your kids "State Fair" corn dogs, at $.50 a piece, every day for a week just before the fair (where they're $4.00).  During that same week, make them buttered cinnamon toast (when Elephant ears are $5.00) every morning and $1.00 cotton candy from Meijer several times.  Do you suppose when you get to the fair they'd be quite satisfied with just having $2.00 for ice cream from the dairy barn.

Well, anyway Austin will enjoy his "fair food" for a few days here and I'll enjoy the 8" or so of snow.  As a matter of fact, I'm going out soon to use the new camera I got for Christmas and catch some shots of all this beautiful whiteness.  Thanks, God!

I'm particularly thankful for a pastor who encourages goal setting and purposeful living.  I haven't been very official about my goals until this year.  I actually started a few days before the end of the year, taking some time during a full week off work to make  a notebook that will help me be more effective in my pursuit.  Goals sorted by category fill the pages and I'm quite pumped thinking of the potential as I revisit the goals a few times each month.   So far so good.

So now, I need to get moving.  Happy snow day!
